What is a Dental Crown?

A Dental Crown is a prosthetic cap that fits over your natural tooth structure that has been ground down. They are permanently cemented to your real tooth and will look like a real tooth.

When are they needed?

- Your tooth has been ground down excessively due to bruxism

- A cavity is too lunch for a traditional filling

- You have had endodontic treatment (root canal) and a crown is needed to protect the tooth.

- You are looking for better cosmetics for your natural teeth

- A dental implant has been placed

What types of materials are crowns made of?

PFM (Porcelain fused to Metal)- A layered material composed of a metal substructure, with a porcelain layer on top.

Zirconia (Zirconium Dioxide)- A monolithic material made from sintering a powder at a very high temperature.

Full Gold- A crown made of full metal material.

What is the process?

A) Tooth Preparation- The decayed area of the tooth is ground down to specific parameters to accept a crown.

B)  Impression- A physical or digital impression of the prepared tooth and surrounding teeth are taken to be sent to the Dental Laboratory for fabrication.

C)  Provisional- A temporary crown is made for the patient to wear during the time which the final crown is being made at the lab.

D) Final Crown-The final crown is ready to be permanently cemented in the mouth.

What is the lifespan of a Dental Crown?

Depending on numerous factors, Crowns can last anywhere from 7-20 years. Oral health and maintenance is a big factor in how long your crown will last.
